I am ready to work with you. How do I start?

The first thing to do is to figure out the exact reasons why you want to redo your kitchen and what kind of investment you are willing to make.   By determining this ahead of time, we are better able to succeed in meeting all of your goals.

The next step is to go thru kitchen magazines and pull out all of the pictures that appeal to you and collect them in a folder.  This will help us get a better idea of your personal design style.

Make an appointment to meet with Mariette in our showroom for a consultation.  Once you do this you will be well on your way to a beautiful new kitchen.

When should I start the process?

It is never too early to start.  The overall process can take between 9-27 weeks or longer, depending on many factors including your ability to make decisions.  So, if you have a time frame that you need to work in you should give yourself as much time as possible to get the project done.

What should I look for when hiring a design firm?

The single most important decision you will make in the remodel process is the selection of a reputable design firm.  The right firm selection is critical to smooth remodel project within your budget and a beautiful, functional design for years to come.

  • Signs of a reputable company:
    • Staff listens to your needs
    • Works within your budget
    • Provides you investment options
    • Provides you firm fixed pricing
  • Ask yourself:
    • “Can I work with this designer for the next 6 months?”
    • “Will s/he return my call on a Sunday afternoon?”
    • “Can I trust him/her with my kitchen?”
  • Do your homework:
    • Look at firm’s portfolio
    • Check multiple references
    • Look at completed projects
  • Go with your gut!

What are your company values?

  • Professionalism.  We pride ourselves in our knowledge, creativity, service and business conduct.
  • Personal Touch.  Our staff serves as your personal “coach” from beginning to end.
  • Honesty. There’s no room for false or misleading statements in our organization.  You will always get the truth- even if a mistake makes us look bad.
  • Trust. We believe in delivering what we promise- NO SURPRISES- and treating your home and project as if it was our own.
  • Value. Working with you to get the most out of your investment dollar.

How experienced is your crew?

Owner and designer Mariette Barsoum has been in the business for over 8 years.  Her education was in Interior Design and went on to become a Certified Kitchen Designer through NKBA.  Interior Designer Heidi Marika-Perez has a degree in Interior Design and has been working in the field for 10 years.  Lindsay Morgan also holds a degree in Interior Design.

All of our contractors and installers are the best in their field.  They are all licensed and insured and have been in the business for decades.

Is there a limit to the scope and complexity of the project that you take on?

We are well equipped to handle almost any project.  With our full custom cabinetry, there is no limit to what we can build.  The only practical limit is this: if we can’t warranty it, we won’t build it.

What products do you carry?

  • Cabinetry:
    • Prevo is our luxury, full custom line.  It is the absolute finest quality.  In Prevo almost everything is possible.
    • Heirloom is our high end custom line.
    • Dura Supreme is our popular line.
    • Medallion is our semi custom line of cabinetry
  • Entertainment Units and Closet Systems
  • Countertops: Granite, Quartz, Wood. Glass, Concrete, Solid Surface and more.
  • Tile& Flooring,
  • Fixtures, Hardware and Lighting:  We offer several lines of sinks and faucets and all of their accessories too.  From fireclay to stainless steel, from brushed nickel to oil rubbed bronze we are able to fit your kitchen with the fixtures that will create the right statement.

I have my own contractor. Can I still work with you?

Again, you absolutely can.  About a quarter of our clients come to us with a contractor already retained.  You have the option of still using our installers to install your kitchen and your contractor can complete the rest of the labor to be done.

We hold very high standards for the contractors and installers that we work with.  Quality workmanship is high priority for us. The advantage of using one of our contractors is that we work very closely with them, together scheduling all of the subcontractors and work that needs to be done.  This eliminates any need for you to oversee the work.  By using our contractors, you have a contract for this service with us, so we take full responsibility for the work that is to be done.

I have my own installer. Can I still work with you?

Of course, if you really prefer to use your own installer, you can still work with us.  Please take into consideration, however, that our installers are familiar with our products, familiar with our designs and because they are working for us, we take responsibility for their work.

Can I install the cabinets myself?

The answer to this question depends on your skills and the amount of time you can dedicate to the installation.  Consider the fact that it takes between one to two weeks for our installer to install the typical kitchen, or 5 to 10 business days.  If you are only able to dedicate your weekends to the project, it will take you between two to five weeks to complete the work – if you are as quick as our installers are.  If you are 50 to 100% slower, it can take you the better part of a couple of months to complete the work.  Some finishes are much more forgiving than others.   We recommend that painted and veneer cabinetry only be installed by a true professional installer – who has installed painted or veneer cabinetry before.

What is your Personal Cost Analysis System?

This system is based on three elements:

  1. Work with you to establish your goals, needs and wants
  2. Educate you on the tradeoffs and the differences and how they impact your investment level
  3. Work with you to finalize a design and a set of choices based on these tradeoffs to fit your needs and goals with the goal of achieving a Balanced design.

My budget is limited. Can I still use you?

We carry a wide range of products that fit many budgets.  We offer semi custom and full custom cabinet lines that fit most budgets. That being said, we work with you to determine which line is right for you and your budget.  We will offer you a Personalized Cost Analysis to show you the “high, med and low” within the scope of your project.  This will guide you in determining what expense can be trimmed to stay within your budget.

To try to answer this question more specifically it will depend on many factors.  What type of countertops are you interested in?  What type of appliances are you looking for?  Does your budget include these items? Don’t forget about the cost of labor.   How big is your kitchen?  How much cabinetry is going into your kitchen?  During our initial meeting in the showroom, Mariette will ask you all of these questions and help you determine whether your budget is realistic for the scope of work you intend to do.

What geography do you cover?

We typically work within a 35 mile radius.  However, we have done numerous projects on the cape, and other areas in New England.  Please never hesitate to ask.

Will we provide References?

Absolutely, many of our former clients have voluntarily expressed that they would be thrilled to provide references for us.  In addition, we also have written letters of recommendation that we are proud to show to perspective clients.

Who will be doing the actual design work?

While Lindsay and Heidi participate in the process bringing fresh and innovative ideas to the table, Mariette is the lead designer on all projects.  She personally begins with the initial concepts, chooses cabinet lines, doors and colors and works thru the finished design.  Mariette also writes all orders, checking them with a fine tooth comb upon their acknowledgement.  Mariette performs all initial and subsequent measurements to ensure dimension accuracy.  She also reviews all plans with installers and contractors to avoid any confusion.  This level of attention to detail is what gives our clients the piece of mind that their gorgeous new kitchen cabinets are going to fit like a glove.

Will my phone calls be returned, my emails answered?

We believe communication is the key to a happy working relationship.  Your questions, comments and concerns are very important to us.  We work diligently to return phone calls and e-mails in a timely manner.  Some of our clients laugh over receiving e-mails from Mariette after 11pm.

What is the scope of your services?

Our design team, under the direct leadership of Mariette Barsoum, will work closely with you from the beginning stages of the initial sketches to the completed installation. We are a complete design/build firm so we can design your space, specify, order and track your materials; schedule trades people, deliveries and installations.

We work with contractors and trades people whose workmanship meets our own level of professional standards.   We are involved in all scheduling of work done in your home, keeping your project on track.   We have our own listened and insured installers who are very familiar with our designs and products.

We offer interior design services, to pull together the “finishing touches” including the countertop, backsplash and flooring, hardware, fixtures, lighting and even paint selections.  Our interior designer works with the client to realize their personality so it may reflect in the overall design of the space.

Who will I be communicating with in your office on a regular basis?

At Divine Kitchens we work as a team.   Under Mariette’s leadership, Heidi and Lindsay are involved in each project and can certainly assist you with your calls, at any stage of your project.

What is a CKD? Why should I care?

A certified Kitchen Designer (CKD) is a professional who is qualified by education and experience to research, design, plan and supervise the installation of residential style kitchens & bathrooms.

The expertise of a CKD lies designing the most functional and aesthetically pleasing arrangement of space to suit the client’s particular tastes’ and needs’.  The designer is experienced in supervising the physical development of the project according to set industry standards which protect the long term investments of the client.

A CKD & CBD has had to prove his or her knowledge, technical understanding and ability to communicate ideas through a stringent examination process, conducted by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA).  He or she must meet these standards before being awarded the CKD designation which assures the client that the individual is a competent kitchen designer.

The Certified Kitchen and Bath Designer deserves your full confidence as certification is based on documented proof of knowledge, ability and experience in the design of residential kitchens and baths.   Furthermore, the CKD & CBD adheres to a strict code of professional conduct.

How do you charge for your services?

The first charge for our services is the design fee.  This fee starts at $500 and up and depends on location of project and the complexity of the design.  Mariette will come to your home, measure your space and ask you how you would like your kitchen to function.  She then prepares a presentation of preliminary designs and pricing.

The second fee is our retainer.  This is 10% of the estimated project cost. Once we receive a retainer from you, we finalize your design to include any changes made during the preliminary presentation.  At this point, all of the specifications will be double and triple checked to ensure accuracy for the design.  Both the design and the retainer fees are put towards the purchase of your cabinetry.

The next fee we collect from you is when we sign the contract at our next meeting.  This is a final presentation with the design exactly as it will be ordered for you.  We will prepare more drawings, elevations, schematics and have final pricing for you.  At the time of signing the contract we collect 50% of the cost of the project.  We break down the additional payments for you and explain when payments are due within the contract.

How long will it take to plan my kitchen?

The two main factors that play a role in how long it will take to complete your kitchen are 1. Your ability to make decisions and 2. Cabinet lead times.

Here is a general break down of approx time frames for the work to be done:

  • Design of space is 2-10 weeks (can be longer depending on the above factors)
  • Installation is 1-2 weeks
  • Counter tops and backsplash installations are 1-2 weeks
  • For a total of 9-27 weeks.
